The Overland Park Bank Building, located at 7341 W.80th St.(just east of our Strang Depot building), was built in 1910. That's 110 years ago! It is a rich part of Overland Park’s history, and one that you should make a point to visit sometime.
To the right is a photo of the bank building taken I n 1912. The photo was taken from the original water tower that was in approximately the same location as the current water tower. The view of the photo is looking southeast. This photo is in our Heritage Center room at the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center (the former King Louie West bowling alley) as well as in our OPHS headquarters.
The exterior of the building has changed little over the years and it is still lovely. Having a grand entry stairway which leads to a charming interior-all decked out in white! There are beautiful architectural details everywhere, inside and out. It is simply a gorgeous building in the heart of downtown Overland Park, and an exquisite highlight in the renewed downtown area.
The original purpose of the building was as a bank, of course. And everyone wants to know, is the vault still there?Well, the answer is yes and no. Yes, the vault room is still in place and you can walk inside it. However, the vault door is long gone as well as all the interior bronze trim. It's currently used for supplies and storage. Notice how thick the wall opening is. It is massive! The current occupant is Bambou Salons and Spas, and we are thankful that they recognize and respect the historical nature of this building.
